What 𐕸 means
It marks the vowel e in Albanian text written in Vithkuqi.
Why was the Vithkuqi alphabet made?
Albanian writer and alphabet-maker Naum Veqilharxhi developed Vithkuqi (1824–1845). Its first spelling primer appeared in 1844; an expanded school edition followed in 1845.
Veqilharxhi wanted an alphabet that Albanian speakers could use across Muslim, Orthodox and Catholic communities, without tying their written language to a particular religion. The primer supported Albanian literacy and the wider national movement.
Vithkuqi did not become the standard Albanian alphabet; Elbasan and Todhri are other historical scripts for Albanian. Some Vithkuqi letterforms resemble cursive Armenian, but a visual resemblance alone does not show that one script descends from the other. As of 2026, revival work uses Vithkuqi in artistic typography, cultural projects and tattoos.
Why does 𐕸 appear as a box?
A box usually means no available font can draw Vithkuqi. The text still contains 𐕸; the receiving app needs a font with Vithkuqi coverage to show its letterform.
It signals historical Albanian writing or a deliberate Vithkuqi design choice.
Outside a Vithkuqi passage, readers may not recognize it as the letter e.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𐕸 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
