It corresponds to Latin c in Albanian spelling.
Naum Veqilharxhi developed the alphabet. Its earliest printed spelling primer dates to 1844 and was expanded in 1845; it circulated in Korçë, then Berat. Elbasan and Todhri were separate Albanian alphabet projects, not Vithkuqi forms.
Why was Vithkuqi created?
It offered Albanian readers a script apart from confessional traditions.
Veqilharxhi promoted it during the Albanian National Awakening as an alternative to Latin, Greek, and Arabic scripts associated with different religions. Later, Vithkuqi appeared in revivalist art and tattoos.
