Its value comes from the formula, not from Waw alone. Waw is the name of Arabic letter و; alphabetic symbols in Arabic math can mark unknown quantities or fixed constants. Each expression defines which role this one has.
How did Arabic mathematical Waw develop?
It grew out of an older mathematical writing tradition. A 2006 Unicode proposal traces these alphabetic forms through centuries of inscriptions, manuscripts, and traditional printed books. Moroccan handbooks used this Arabic-script notation before French mathematical notation took hold there. The proposal sought separate character identities so older and current Arabic formulas could be represented accurately in digital text.
Arabic mathematical letters can stand for variables and constants. They follow an older letter order—alif, beh, jeem, dal, then Waw—rather than the order used in modern dictionaries. Unicode 18.0 describes use with Arabic- and Persian-based scripts and reports these forms in most mathematics handbooks in West Asia, Libya, and Algeria.
Why doesn't 𞸅 join nearby Arabic letters?
Mathematical Arabic symbols keep their isolated shapes. Ordinary Arabic letters change shape to connect within a word; this mathematical alphabet does not use that contextual shaping. The distinction preserves a symbol's chosen mathematical style when a formula sits beside Arabic text.
