Brahmi Letter Dda

32/115

𑀟 is a Brahmi letter — the script of Ashoka's edicts — writing ḍa, a retroflex d said with the tongue curled back. Not a pictogram or emoji: it matters for reading early Indian inscriptions and needs a Brahmi-capable font to render.

What 𑀟 means

A retroflex d — tongue curled to the palate — read /ḍa/. Voiced and unaspirated: a plain d, not breathy ḍha. Like all Brahmi consonants it carries a built-in a; a vowel sign changes it, a virama silences it.

The oldest dated traces are inscribed sherds from Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, dated to the beginning of the 4th century BCE; Ashoka's 3rd-century BCE edicts are the earliest decipherable inscriptions in India — gradual growth, not one inventor.

Ashoka carved Brahmi into edicts preaching dharma, his Buddhist moral code; other stones record gifts and land grants. 𑀟 did plain spelling duty — no hidden emblem.

Does 𑀟 mean the same in every Brahmi text?

The consonant stays; the vowel convention can flip. Standard Brahmi reads a bare consonant as ḍa; one Old Tamil Brahmi spelling system reads it as bare ḍ with no vowel.

Brahmi mothered most South and Southeast Asian scripts; the same retroflex d lives on as Devanagari ड and Tamil ட — don't substitute the modern letters.

Sibling Kharoshthi used the same consonant-carries-a design but ran right to left in the northwest — kin, not the same alphabet.

How do I type 𑀟 without mangling the syllable?

Enter U1101F by code point or a Brahmi layout; add marks after. Latin keyboards have no Brahmi key — use AltX in Word, CtrlShiftU on Linux, or Unicode Hex Input on Mac.

Vowel signs swap the built-in a; virama 𑁆 before the next consonant welds a conjunct. Without Brahmi shaping you get a box or a broken stack.

Historical transcription, epigraphy and script demos — odd as an unexplained chat symbol.

Not an emoji or ornament — a consonant whose vowel depends on the marks around it.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𑀟 show up as a box?

Your font lacks Brahmi. Install a Brahmi-capable font like Noto Sans Brahmi; conjuncts also need shaping to stack properly.

Is Brahmi still used today?

Not as a living script — it faded by the early medieval period. Its descendants write daily; Brahmi survives in scholarship and revival lettering.
