Brahmi Letter Tta

30/115

No keyboard types 𑀝: insert it by its code point, U1101D, or through a character map — and if it shows up as a hollow box, install a Brahmi font like Noto Sans Brahmi. The letter is Brahmi's retroflex ṭa, a t spoken with the tongue curled back.

What 𑀝 means

By its code point, U1101D — no keyboard carries it.

In Word on Windows, type 1101D then AltX; on Linux press CtrlShiftU, then 1101d; on a Mac use the Character Viewer, or Unicode Hex Input with the surrogate pair D804 DC1D. If the glyph renders as an empty square, the fix is a Brahmi-covering font such as Noto Sans Brahmi — the stored character is still right.

What does 𑀝 mean?

Brahmi's retroflex ṭa — a curled-tongue consonant read as ṭa.

It sits in the retroflex series beside ṭha, ḍa, ḍha and ṇa — not beside dental ta. Brahmi consonants carry an inherent /a/: a vowel sign swaps it, a virama stroke cancels it, and Old Tamil Brahmi can drop the vowel entirely. Scholars transliterate the letter ṭ, a t with a dot below.

Firmly dated Brahmi begins on potsherds at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, in the early fourth century BCE; in the third century BCE the emperor Ashoka had it carved on rocks and pillars as moral and administrative guidance. Regional varieties fed descendant scripts including Devanagari and Tamil, and Central Asian forms reached Khotanese and Tocharian — so fonts draw a normalized shape, not one frozen inscriptional silhouette.

A scholar's letter: epigraphic, not social.

Never use it for ordinary dental ta — that sound has its own letter, 𑀢.

  • Brahmi was deciphered in the 1830s by James Prinsep, an East India Company official, working from bilingual coins and Ashoka's edicts.

Questions people ask

2

Is Brahmi still used to write anything?

No. Brahmi is a dead script — it survives on ancient inscriptions and coins, not in everyday writing.

Is Brahmi the same as Sanskrit?

No. Brahmi is a script, Sanskrit a language. Ashoka's edicts use Brahmi for Prakrit; Sanskrit later rode descendant scripts like Devanagari.
