What 𑀢 means

The usual syllable is ta, with an inherent a vowel.

In Brahmi, each consonant normally carries an unwritten a, so 𑀢 reads as ta. A vowel sign changes that syllable: 𑀢𑀸 is ta with a long a. The Brahmi virama 𑁆 cancels the built-in vowel; before another consonant it can make a conjunct, a joined consonant form.

How did Brahmi develop?

Brahmi’s earliest record is debated; inscriptions are its clearest early evidence.

Brahmi appears in Ashoka’s public inscriptions from the third century BCE. Pottery fragments from Anuradhapura, an ancient city in Sri Lanka, have been argued to date to the beginning of the fourth century BCE. If so, they place Sri Lanka in Brahmi’s early development; that dating remains an archaeological argument, not a settled start date.

Brahmi put language into durable public and commemorative writing on stone, buildings, graves, and pottery. Ashoka used it for public instructions and dhamma proclamations—moral guidance on justice, restraint, welfare, and coexistence among religious groups. During the first millennium CE, regional Brahmi forms became ancestors of scripts including Devanagari and Tamil. Shapes and spelling rules changed; Old Tamil Brahmi could leave a consonant without the usual inherent vowel.

Why does 𑀢 look different on my screen?

Fonts and shaping engines control how it appears.

A square usually means the font lacks Brahmi coverage or the app lacks Indic shaping support. Fonts with coverage may still draw historical forms or consonant conjuncts differently; those are display choices, not changes to the encoded letter.

Why does Brahmi ta show as a square?

A square usually means the font lacks a Brahmi glyph or the app lacks Indic shaping support. Use a font with Brahmi coverage and shaping; the character itself stays the same.

Is every Brahmi ta glyph historically the same?

No. Brahmi forms changed across regions and periods, and fonts can draw supported historical styles differently. The encoded character identifies a letter; by itself, it cannot date an inscription.
