What त means
It is a dental t, pronounced against the teeth. The term ta akshar means the letter ta. Its default vowel is conventionally written “a”; a vowel sign replaces it, while a halant, also called virama, suppresses it. In words, read त with the surrounding spelling rather than as a separate “ta” every time.
Where does त come from?
Its shape evolved through earlier Indian scripts. Its ancestry runs through Brahmi, the script used in Emperor Ashoka’s public inscriptions in the 3rd century BCE, and later Nagari, which developed in northern India from the 10th century.
These writing traditions recorded speech in royal orders, donations, and other documents. The letter represented a sound, not a picture or a reaction. Its role remains that of a letter across the languages that use Devanagari.

1Why does त change shape?
It can join another consonant. The font may display a conjunct—a combined shape—or a half form, a reduced letter shape. It may instead show the halant explicitly. These are ways of displaying the letter sequence.
