What आ means
It represents a long “a” sound. In Hindi aa spellings and Sanskrit, आ contrasts with the shorter vowel written अ. It is an independent vowel: a letter used when no consonant precedes the vowel within its syllable. After a consonant, write the attached vowel sign ा instead: क + ा becomes का, transliterated kā.
How did आ develop?
It developed with the Devanagari writing system. Devanagari belongs to the Brahmi family of scripts. It developed from Gupta-era writing, alongside related traditions called Śāradā and Siddhamātr̥kā. Recognizable Devanagari forms appear in the 7th century CE; the script reached maturity around the 13th century CE.
आ preserves a distinction between short and long vowels important in Sanskrit inscriptions and manuscripts. That spelling distinction continued in languages using Devanagari, including Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali; pronunciation depends on the language.
How do I type आ?
Select the independent vowel in your Devanagari input method. Transliteration keyboards convert Latin-letter input into Devanagari. Some accept aa or ā for आ; the resulting form can depend on the preceding consonant. Check whether your input produced the letter आ or the attached sign ा.

1Why does आ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
