siddham letter aa

Siddham Letter Aa

𑖁 is Siddham’s long ā: in Sanskrit, an “a” held longer than its short counterpart. Alone, this letter does not name a mantra or deity. Siddham later took on ceremonial roles in Japanese Buddhism, and fonts can draw its historical forms differently.

What 𑖁 means

It is an independent vowel in Siddham.

“Independent” means it can stand as the vowel of a syllable without a consonant before it. Its sound is Sanskrit ā, a long “a” held longer than short a; when the ā mark is unavailable, it is sometimes written aa.

Compare it with 𑖯, the dependent long-ā sign written after a consonant. The two mark the same vowel sound in different positions.

Why is 𑖁 associated with Buddhist writing?

It traveled with Sanskrit Buddhist texts from South Asia to East Asia.

Siddham developed as a South Asian Brahmic script around the 5th century CE. It was used to write Sanskrit, including Buddhist texts. A ca. 8th-century Dunhuang copy of the Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī, a Buddhist chant, places Siddham beside Sogdian spellings of the chant’s sounds written between the lines.

Buddhist transmission carried Siddham into China during the 6th–7th centuries CE and later to Japan; Japanese tradition credits the monk Kūkai with introducing it in 806. In the Japanese Shingon tradition, a Buddhist school, Siddham is used for Sanskrit mantras (sacred formulas) and sutras (Buddhist teachings). Its role shifted from manuscript writing toward ritual and ceremonial writing, including copied sutras and seed syllables—single letters used in ritual. Siddham belongs to the Brahmic script family, which also includes Śāradā and Devanāgarī.

What does it mean when someone sends 𑖁 alone?

It gives a vowel, not a complete message.

A standalone 𑖁 identifies the long ā sound, but not a whole Sanskrit word, mantra, or deity name. Those readings depend on the neighboring text and the tradition using it.

If it arrives by itself, you can identify a Siddham vowel but not which larger text it came from; ask for the source before assigning it a ritual meaning.

A manuscript, script-study, or Buddhist ritual register; a ritual meaning depends on the text and setting.

Do not name a mantra or deity from 𑖁 alone.

It can: Unicode identifies the character, while each font supplies its drawing. Siddham vowel forms have historical variants, and some distinctions are handled by fonts.
