What ऋ means
Choose the independent-vowel entry, not a consonant plus i. Devanagari input methods list ऋ as a standalone vowel and ृ as a dependent sign that attaches to a consonant. In the ITRANS transliteration system, enter RRi or Ri for the standalone letter.
Use ृ after a consonant, as in कृ and within संस्कृत. If a transliterator offers both a standalone vowel and a consonant-plus-vowel choice, choose the one that matches the spelling you need.
what does ऋ mean?
In Sanskrit, r itself can form a syllable. This vocalic r is written ऋ when it stands alone and ृ after a consonant. ऋग्वेद, a collection of Vedic hymns, begins with ऋ; संस्कृत shows the dependent form inside a consonant cluster.
Sanskrit inscriptions in Brahmi, an earlier South Asian script, are attested from the first century BCE; Brahmi’s earliest attested inscriptions date to the third century BCE. Devanagari developed through regional Brahmi-derived forms: Proto-Nagari appears toward the end of the sixth century CE, and by the eleventh century Devanagari was important for writing Sanskrit.
The traditional Sanskrit vowel inventory also includes ॠ, the longer vocalic-r vowel, and ऌ, the vocalic-l vowel.
why does ऋ sound different in Hindi and Marathi?
The language around it decides the reading. Sanskrit uses a vocalic r; Standard Hindi usually reads the letter as ri, Marathi as ru, and Nepali as ri. In Hindi, it remains in Sanskrit-derived spellings even when speakers use the local pronunciation.
Check the language before correcting someone’s pronunciation: the same glyph follows different reading conventions.
It signals Sanskrit or Sanskrit-derived spelling, not a particular emotional tone.
In Hindi or Marathi, do not impose the Sanskrit reading from the glyph alone.

3Questions people ask
1why does र् ऋ look unusual?
Valid, but uncommon. Reph is the over-letter form of र for r closing a Sanskrit cluster. Before ऋ, it is encoded as र virama ् ऋ, not र ृ; virama suppresses र’s built-in vowel. A font and text engine must support this shaping.
