What द means
Say “da” with your tongue at your teeth. This dental d is pronounced without the extra breath of ध.
A vowel mark changes the built-in vowel; a halant, a vowel-cancelling mark, suppresses it. Hindi can also leave this short “uh” vowel unpronounced without marking its removal, so read the whole word.
द belongs to an evolving script tradition. Its ancestry runs through Gupta and Siddhamātrikā, earlier Indian scripts, back to Brahmi, used for Emperor Ashoka’s public edicts in the third century BCE. Devanagari matured around the thirteenth century CE. It served Sanskrit inscriptions and religious manuscripts, then expanded through writing in regional languages and print.
Why does द change shape?
Joined consonants can merge strokes or hide parts of द. Such joined forms are called conjuncts: examples include द्द, द्ध, द्य, and द्व. Their appearance depends on the font.
The script’s cultural role changed too. By around 1900, Hindi’s use of Devanagari carried political significance alongside Urdu’s use of a Perso-Arabic script. That concerns the writing system, not a separate meaning for द.
How do I type द?
Use a Devanagari keyboard or a phonetic input method. Phonetic input converts Latin-letter spellings into Devanagari and offers candidates; select द rather than assuming every d-like result is interchangeable.
An ordinary letter: the surrounding word supplies the tone.
द, ध, and ड represent different consonants. Swapping them changes the spelling.

1Why does द show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
