What ད means
It writes a consonant in a Tibetan syllable. Wylie spells it da; Kha varieties use a t with a puff of air, while Ga varieties use an unaspirated t or d.
The Tibetan script took shape in the seventh century, modeled on writing systems from India for Buddhist texts and Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Some of the earliest surviving records are Lhasa stone inscriptions from the eighth century. In stacks, ྡ is the subjoined form of ད, set below another consonant.

Questions people ask
1Why does ད show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
