Tibetan letter la

99/211

ལ is Tibetan la: a consonant letter with an unwritten “a” vowel when it stands alone. In a word, it may mark a recipient, place, or destination, or join a consonant stack, where letters are arranged vertically; Tibetan spelling can preserve distinctions that modern pronunciation no longer makes.

What ལ means

A consonant letter that can also mark grammatical relations.

Alone, it is read as la, with an inherent “a” vowel. After a noun, the la particle can mark a recipient, location, or destination; it can also link words or close a sentence.

Tibetan spelling is traditional and does not always match modern pronunciation. The script also writes Dzongkha in Bhutan and appears in Tibetan Buddhist liturgy beyond Tibet, so the surrounding language and sentence determine how ལ is read.

How did ལ become part of Tibetan writing?

It took shape during a seventh-century state and translation project.

Tibetan tradition credits the minister Thonmi Sambhota with shaping the script after study in India. Historical comparisons connect its letter forms to North Indian writing; the Zhol pillar, an early surviving inscription, dates to circa 767.

Early Tibetan records show writing used for laws, censuses, administration, and the court’s Buddhist translation work. This letter’s early shape closely matches la in Late Gupta, a North Indian writing style, and in Nepalese and North Indian inscriptions from the late sixth and early seventh century.

Why does ལ look different inside a stack?

Its smaller shape marks a different slot in a consonant stack.

The full letter ལ can be the root, or main consonant; its subjoined form ླ sits beneath another consonant, as in ཀླ. Tibetan spelling assigns each letter in a stack its own position.

A font’s shaping software assembles the stack. If it breaks or the smaller form fails to appear, check Tibetan font or text support. Typing a full letter takes one input; a complete stack needs its other consonants and any vowel mark in logical order.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ལ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
