What ༈ means
It marks a boundary around a larger unit of Tibetan text. Sbrul shad can begin a smaller text or prayer, divide chapters, or appear at both ends of an insertion in a pecha, a traditional Tibetan book.
Unicode 16.0 says Tibetan grammars, books describing the language’s rules, did not define this mark; its role comes from Tibetan textual tradition.
Why does ༈ need special spacing?
Keep the mark and its spaces together on the same line. Tibetan text layout uses nonbreaking spaces, which do not allow a line break, on both sides; a line should not begin with sbrul shad.
Formal punctuation for organizing Tibetan text; it signals textual structure rather than a speaker’s emotion.
In EWTS, ! is an input stand-in, not the mark’s reading.
