᠁

mongolian ellipsis

Mongolian Ellipsis

᠁ is the four-dot ellipsis used in Mongol bichig (Hudum) and Todo. It marks omitted words, hesitation, or an unfinished thought. It is punctuation, not an emoji.

What ᠁ means

It marks missing or unfinished text. Use it when speech trails off or stumbles, or when a quotation skips words.

The circa 1225 Genghis Stele is the earliest surviving Mongol-script text cited by the sources, not evidence that ᠁ appears there. Mongol bichig developed from Old Uyghur; Todo and Manchu are adaptations, and Sibe descends through Manchu. As of 2026, no consulted source establishes ᠁'s first use or a meaning change by period.

Why does ᠁ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
