Tibetan letter ya

97/211

ཡ is the Tibetan letter ya: by itself, it writes a syllable with a y-like opening and the built-in vowel a. In Tibetan spelling, ya also appears as ya-btags, a lowered form under another consonant; read the stack as one unit because its sound varies with the word and dialect.

What ཡ means

Alone, it reads ya: the y in “yes” plus a. Tibetan ya is a spelling unit, so its sound comes from the syllable around it, not an isolated word.

With ya-btags (subjoined ya), the consonant sits below a root letter, as in ཀྱ, པྱ, or མྱ. Read each stack as one syllable. A Tibetan grammar from 1912 describes པྱ as ch-like, ཕྱ as a breathier ch, བྱ as j-like, and མྱ as a palatal n sound like Spanish ñ in many varieties. These are dialect-specific examples; the target Tibetan variety matters.

Tibetan ya took shape through adaptation

Tibetan writing adapted North Indian script forms. A tripartite (three-part) Brahmi ya remained common into the early seventh century; a bipartite (two-part) form replaced it by 666. Tibetan ཡ may reflect a late sixth-century ya or a similar Brahmi character, gha, for a different sound. The Tibetan alphabet was likely formalized by the 640s; the earliest surviving Tibetan stone inscriptions used for comparison date from the 760s.

Early written Tibetan served both administration and religion: records mention laws, censuses, tax records, and military messages alongside Buddhist sutras and prayers. Later spelling dropped ya from older ma-ya-btags forms: myi became mi, and myed became med. Dunhuang manuscripts preserve older forms through the end of the tenth century.

How do I type ཡ?

Use ya in Wylie for the standalone letter. Wylie is a way to spell Tibetan with Latin letters; it records the written form, not a universal pronunciation. A Tibetan keyboard lets you enter the native script directly.

If a stack displays strangely, check the sequence as well as the font. Standard Tibetan uses the shape-changing subjoined ya ྱ in stacks; Unicode also encodes a full-form subjoined ya for transliteration and transcription. ཡ is the standalone form.

Formal and technical: it belongs in Tibetan writing, language study, transliteration, or archival reading.

In a stack, read the syllable in its Tibetan variety; the visible letters do not map one by one to sounds.
