What ཟ means
ཟ is a Tibetan consonant used to write syllables.
The Tibetan alphabet took shape from Indic script models in the seventh century, though its route of development is debated. ཟ is almost certainly a mirror-image adaptation of the letter ja in the Gupta script, an Indic writing system. Early surviving records include imperial inscriptions and handwritten texts from Dunhuang; the Zhol pillar, an inscribed stone monument, dates to around 767.
Traditional Tibetan histories link the alphabet with bringing Buddhism from India and writing Sanskrit. The earliest evidence also shows state uses: laws, official ranks, land and tax registers, weights and measures, and army administration. Buddhist texts and prayers appear too, as the same script served government and religious life.
Why does ཟ sound like s?
In Lhasa speech, ཟ can have an s-like sound.
Wylie is a system for representing Tibetan letters with Latin letters. In Wylie, ཟ is written za; that spelling identifies the letter, not a guaranteed spoken sound. Pronunciation guides give it z-like or s-like values, while ས is written sa. The letters remain distinct even where speech makes them sound alike.
Tibetan speech in the Lhasa, Amdo, and Khams regions varies; formal reading can follow written distinctions more closely than everyday conversation. Choose the variety you mean before treating za as a pronunciation.
How do I type ཟ?
Wylie input uses za; Tibetan keyboards use different layouts.
Enter za in a Wylie or EWTS (Extended Wylie Transliteration Scheme) input method when you want the written letter. Wylie is used in Tibetan study with Latin letters; native Tibetan input methods use keyboard layouts with their own key assignments. As of 2026, options include Tibetan PRC, Monlam, and custom layouts across Windows, macOS, and Linux, so the physical key depends on the active layout.
Tibetan consonants can stack: a full consonant sits above smaller subjoined consonants, and the font shapes the stack as one syllabic unit. So ཟ may look different in a stack than it does alone.
A Tibetan script letter with no conversational tone of its own.
Do not read Wylie za as a guaranteed spoken sound.

Questions people ask
1Why does ཟ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
