What ზ means
It represents the voiced z sound in Georgian.
As of 2026, the Georgian alphabet’s origin remains debated; Georgian chronicles credit King Parnavaz as its creator. Its earliest surviving inscriptions date to the fifth century and use Asomtavruli; Bolnisi Sioni is dated 493/494. Asomtavruli served monuments and church books. Nuskhuri developed for faster copying and paired with it in Khutsuri, the Georgian church script. Mkhedruli became everyday writing outside the church; the z sound stayed the same.

Questions people ask
1Why does ზ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
