What ტ means
It marks an ejective “t,” unlike aspirated თ.
To make an ejective, close the voice box briefly as the tongue releases “t”; თ releases it with a puff of breath. When Georgian is written in Latin letters, the apostrophe in tʼ marks this contrast.
The Bolnisi Sioni inscription, a stone text dated 493–494, is the oldest Georgian writing found in Georgia. It includes an Asomtavruli predecessor to this letter and records church construction and prayer. Georgian writing later used Nuskhuri for manuscripts and Mkhedruli for secular writing; Mkhedruli became the everyday script. Scholars debate the exact transition.
A box for ტ means the font lacks Georgian character support; the letter itself is unchanged.
