Georgian Letter Gan

გ, called gan or gani, is the Georgian g: it represents the sound at the start of go. It belongs to Mkhedruli, the script used for ordinary Georgian writing. Older Georgian scripts have their own forms of the same letter.

What გ means

It sounds like the g in English go. Gan is normally written as g when Georgian words are represented in Latin letters. Its curves vary with the typeface, but those variations do not change the letter.

Gan connects modern writing with older Georgian scripts

The older form Ⴂ belongs to Asomtavruli, an early Georgian script. Surviving examples include mosaic inscriptions at Bir el Qutt, around 430, and an inscription at Bolnisi Sioni church, dated 493/494. Early Georgian writing served Christian scripture translation, worship and church inscriptions. Asomtavruli developed into Nuskhuri, used in church manuscripts; Mkhedruli became the main script for secular and modern writing.
