It represents the n sound in Georgian words. This is Mkhedruli n, from the script used for ordinary modern Georgian writing.

Its shape belongs to an evolving writing tradition. Surviving Georgian church inscriptions in Palestine date to the fifth century. One account links the alphabet's creation to translating Christian texts and conducting worship in Georgian; its origins remain debated.

By the ninth century, Nuskhuri developed for faster manuscript writing, while the older Asomtavruli served as capitals in religious texts. Mkhedruli appeared by the tenth century and became the standard script for nonreligious writing.
