What ო means
It represents a rounded “o” vowel. The pronunciation is written /ɔ/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet. When Georgian words are written in Latin letters, Oni is represented by o; typing Latin o does not produce ო.
Georgian writing is securely attested from the 5th century; the Bolnisi Sioni inscription dates to 493/494 AD. These dates concern the older script, not today's exact ო shape. The writing developed from Asomtavruli through Nuskhuri to Mkhedruli, spanning inscriptions, church manuscripts, and everyday writing.

Questions people ask
1Why does ო show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
