What ჵ means
Older Georgian used it for a long “o” sound and in letter-numbering.
Georgian letters also stood for numbers: a 2008 Georgian mathematics encyclopedia says ჵ completed the alphabetic number scale at 10,000. The oldest surviving Georgian inscriptions date to the fifth century; that dates the wider script, not this letter. A study of Georgian letter forms treats it as a later addition to a writing tradition that includes historical forms called Asomtavruli, Nuskhuri and Mkhedruli. Batsbi, a language using an adapted form of Mkhedruli, uses ჵ for a consonant made by narrowing the throat deep inside while the vocal cords vibrate.
