What ჶ means
ჶ represents the f sound in Georgian-script writing.
One account places its use in Greek-influenced loanwords in the 11th–12th centuries; another reports Georgian manuscript attestations in the 13th century and wider use from the 16th century. Its shape was modeled on Greek Φ, but the two are distinct letters.
ჶ was added so Georgian spellings could retain imported f sounds in borrowed words instead of forcing them into a native spelling. A 19th-century spelling reform removed it from ordinary literary Georgian.
Where is ჶ still used?
It appears mainly in Laz and specialist dialect writing.
Georgian-script Laz uses ჶ for the f sound. The Taoan and Imerkhevian varieties of Georgian also appear with it in linguistic records, especially in borrowed words shaped by Turkish contact. In practice, it points to Laz, dialect, historical, or linguistic writing.

A specialist and historical letter; its language or text context supplies the reading.
Alone, ჶ names no word; ask what text it came from.
