What ག means

In Wylie/EWTS input, type ga for ག.

Wylie and its extended form, EWTS, enter Tibetan with Latin keystrokes. In EWTS, + can force a vertical stack; gya makes stacked ga–ya, while g.ya keeps ga and ya side by side. The dot changes the spelling sequence, not its styling.

What does ག do?

It is the Tibetan consonant ga; its job depends on its place.

As the main consonant, it carries an inherent a vowel: the vowel is heard but not written separately. As a prefix, it is usually silent but can affect the following sound or tone; as a suffix, it closes the syllable. In Central Tibetan varieties, Ga pronunciations may start with a plain k-like sound, while Kha varieties use an aspirated k—a k with a puff of air. The exact sound also depends on the letter's syllable role.

Tibetan writing grew through North Indian scribal contact

North Indian scribes using Gupta-derived letterforms helped formalize Tibetan writing in the 630s and 640s. A looped ga appears occasionally in North India from the third century; a square-loop form resembling early Tibetan ག appears in northwestern rock inscriptions from the seventh century. These forms sit within a documented script connection; resemblance alone does not identify one inscription as this letter's model.

Accounts of the seventh-century project emphasize translating Buddhist texts from India and representing Sanskrit. Early Tibetan records also show royal administration of law, taxes, military matters, and land. Tibetan script is also used for Dzongkha, a language of Bhutan, and in Tibetan Buddhist traditions among Mongolian communities.
