What 𑱴 means

Use a Marchen keyboard for longer text; its layout sets the keystroke.

Marchen needs a supporting font and shaping engine: consonants stack, and vowel signs attach to the base or stack. It has no intersyllabic tsheg (a written syllable separator), so boundaries can be unclear; an invisible zero-width space can mark one for text selection.

BabelStone reports a deep-stack vowel-height issue when ga is a prefix under Windows 10 or with HarfBuzz, a text-shaping engine, as of 2026-09-14.

What does 𑱴 do in a Marchen word?

It supplies the ga consonant in a Marchen syllable. A consonant normally carries an “a” sound unless a vowel sign changes it, so the full reading depends on the surrounding syllable.

Marchen was used to write Zhang-zhung in Bön texts and has also been used for Tibetan. Bön is a Tibetan religious tradition; Marchen also appears in Bön literature and inscriptions on buildings. Marchen shares Tibetan-style consonant stacking and uses below-letter forms for wa, ya, and ra. Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha are related Bön script traditions, not names for this letter.

Manuscript evidence for the Zhang-zhung-related scripts is datable from around 1687; a 2013 study found no securely dated examples from before the late 17th century. That dates surviving evidence, not the script’s invention. A bronze-seal inscription kept at Menri is proposed as an early example, but its date and provenance remain uncertain.

A specialist heritage-script letter; its wider register comes from the Marchen text around it.

Why does 𑱴 show as a box?

The font or shaping system lacks Marchen support. A box is a display fallback; the underlying character remains unchanged. Use a font and shaper with Marchen coverage.
