marchen letter ka

Marchen Letter Ka

3/68

𑱲 is Marchen's letter ka: in words, it supplies the ka consonant rather than a message by itself. Marchen descends from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian writing system, and first served the extinct Zhang-zhung language in Bön, a Tibetan religious tradition; later Bön writing also used it for Tibetan. Consonant clusters stack vertically, so a font without Marchen support may show a box.

What 𑱲 means

It writes the ka consonant in Marchen words.

Marchen descends from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian writing system. It first served Zhang-zhung, an extinct language, in Bön texts; Bön is a Tibetan religious tradition. The tradition places Marchen's origin in Zhang-zhung before the seventh century. Surviving examples are sparse, and a bronze-seal inscription at Menri is described as one of the earliest known. Later Bön writing also used Marchen for Tibetan. The Unicode Standard's 17.0.0 edition records modern inscriptions and Bön literature.

Why does Marchen ka show as a box?

The font may not include Marchen glyphs.

Marchen's vertical consonant stacks form when a base letter joins subjoined consonants, letters written beneath it. Vowel signs can sit around the stack. A font without Marchen support or shaping can display the result incorrectly.

Marchen does not use the Tibetan tsheg, the separator written between Tibetan syllables. For an unclear syllable boundary in Marchen, a zero-width space can mark the break for text processing without visible punctuation.

Is Marchen ka the same as Tibetan ka?

No. Marchen and Tibetan are separate scripts.

Marchen's digital encoding pattern follows Tibetan's, but the letters remain distinct. The proposal that describes Marchen's encoding also names Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha as related Bön script traditions. These are separate traditions, not alternate names for 𑱲.

Why does 𑱲 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
