marchen letter la

Marchen Letter La

28/68

𑲋 is Marchen la, a consonant that helps spell syllables rather than a standalone word. Marchen was used for the historic Zhangzhung language and in Bön writing for Tibetan; its consonants can stack. If the glyph appears as a square, the font or text-shaping support may be missing.

Text symbol

What 𑲋 means

It is a consonant in a Marchen syllable. The name la identifies the letter; its job is to help write a spoken syllable, not to stand for a separate idea.

A main consonant can combine with another consonant written beneath it, and vowel signs can attach to the resulting stack. Without a written vowel sign, the main consonant carries the script’s built-in vowel a.

How did Marchen develop?

Marchen has a traditional link to the ancient Zhangzhung kingdom. The 2011 Unicode proposal describes this origin tradition and notes that the surviving premodern record is sparse. It names an inscription on a bronze seal held at Menri Monastery as one of the earliest known examples.

Marchen was used to write the extinct Zhangzhung language in Tibetan Bön texts. The 2011 proposal also documents it for Tibetan writing, Bön literature, and architectural inscriptions.

Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha are described as related Bön scripts. Marchen is distinct from Tibetan, though its consonant-stacking system is similar.

Why does Marchen letter la render as a box?

The font may lack it, or the text shaper may be incomplete. A missing-glyph square appears when a font does not contain Marchen characters.

Marchen stacks also need text shaping that positions the main consonant, lower consonants, and vowel signs. Incomplete support can leave parts visible but misplaced. If a longer sequence breaks while this letter displays, check the app’s shaping support.
