What 𑲊 means
It is the Marchen consonant letter ra, used inside a syllable. Read it as part of a Marchen spelling: surrounding vowels and stacked consonants shape the syllable, so this character alone cannot be translated as a word. In the Tibetan-style encoding model, base ra can sit at the top of a vertical stack, with subjoined consonants beneath it.
The 2011 encoding proposal describes Marchen’s traditional origin in the pre-Buddhist Zhang-zhung kingdom as reputed, not securely dated. It identifies an inscription on a bronze seal at Menri Monastery as one of the earliest known witnesses and says few premodern examples are known.
Why does Marchen resemble Tibetan?
The scripts share stacking practices, but Marchen is distinct. Marchen belongs to a group of related Bön script traditions that also includes Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha. That connects the traditions; it does not make their letters interchangeable.
The 2011 encoding proposal says Marchen differs substantially from Tibetan and Lantsa, despite similar subjoined forms for wa, ya, and ra. It also describes later uses in Bön literature and architectural inscriptions.
Why does 𑲊 change shape in a stack?
Its form depends on the stack and the font. Marchen uses contextual shaping: a consonant’s displayed form can change with its position and nearby vowel signs. As of 2026, BabelStone’s Marchen font documentation describes a vowel-height problem in deep stacks under Windows 10 with HarfBuzz. A missing square or malformed stack points to a font-support issue.
The 2011 encoding proposal notes that Marchen has no explicit syllable separator. When software needs a clear boundary for processing or selection, a zero-width space can mark it.
Specialist and ceremonial: Marchen ra belongs in Marchen writing, especially Bön liturgical text.
A lone ra is part of a spelling; treating it as a whole word can mislead the reader.

1Can the same Marchen letter have different shapes?
Yes. Its displayed form can change with its place in a stack, and font support affects how well the stack is shaped.
