marchen letter -a

Marchen Letter -A

𑲈 is the Marchen base letter called -A, distinct from Marchen Letter A, 𑲏. Marchen belongs to the Tibetan Bön tradition and has been used to write Zhang-zhung and Tibetan in Bön settings. The hyphen in its Latin-script name is part of the label, not a minus sign.

What 𑲈 means

No. 𑲈 is a separate Marchen base letter. The hyphen in -A belongs to the Latin-script character label; it is not punctuation or subtraction. Marchen also has a separate base letter 𑲏 and a dependent vowel-length sign 𑲰, called a-chung, which lengthens the vowel it follows. Neither is interchangeable with 𑲈.

Like Tibetan writing, Marchen can stack consonants vertically. A font may show 𑲈 within a larger stack; shaping changes its display, not its character identity.

What was Marchen -A used to write?

It wrote Zhang-zhung and also served for Tibetan. Zhang-zhung is an extinct language once used in Tibet; Marchen has also been used to write Tibetan in Bön settings. Bön is a Tibetan religious tradition. Traditional accounts trace Marchen to the kingdom of Zhang-zhung in western and northern Tibet, before Buddhism reached the region in the seventh century. In 2013, a Unicode proposal reported that no early Marchen texts were known and suggested the recognizable script may be a much later innovation.

One of the earliest known examples is a Zhang-zhung inscription on a bronze seal kept at Menri Monastery. Later evidence includes calligraphy manuals and temple and library inscriptions. As of 2026, Marchen appears in modern Bön literature and architectural inscriptions. Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha are other distinct scripts associated with Bön.

How do I type Marchen -A?

Use Unicode code-point entry or a dedicated Marchen keyboard. If your system supports hexadecimal Unicode entry, enter 11C88; otherwise use a dedicated Marchen input method. A standard Latin A key will not produce this character.

Input and display are separate. Your font needs Marchen coverage, and a vertical consonant stack needs shaping support; if the single letter displays but the stack does not, check the renderer.
