Khmer Letter To

18/114

ទ is a Khmer consonant letter, romanized as tô, with a basic reading /tɔː/. In ordinary text it helps build written syllables, so the isolated glyph is not something to translate. A following consonant can stack it into a lower, reshaped form.

What ទ means

The name tô identifies a consonant sound, not a complete word.

Its standalone pronunciation is /tɔː/, but a Khmer syllable gets its full reading from the surrounding signs: consonants carry an inherent vowel, and marks placed before, above, below, or after them finish the syllable. As an ô-series consonant, ទ also changes how a following dependent vowel sounds.

On the NiDA desktop layout, ShiftT produces this letter while plain T produces ត.

How old is the writing tradition behind this letter?

Khmer writing grew over centuries; no single inventor is credited with this letter.

The script descends from Brahmi writing from South India, and Cambodia's earliest dated inscription, K. 557/600, comes from 611 CE. It is Old Khmer with Sanskrit loanwords, carved in an early Pallava style. That dates the surviving tradition, not the birth date of this one modern shape.

That early record documents religious endowments of people, animals, trees, and rice fields to deities. The system began as a tool for religious and administrative records, not as a standalone emblem.

Why does this letter change shape in a Khmer word?

The sequence around it determines the rendered syllable.

Khmer places vowel signs before, above, below, or after a consonant, and writes a later consonant in a word in smaller subscript form below. The subscript form of ទ is stored as coeng plus ទ, so ្ធ sequence is a two-character sequence rather than a second base letter.

Khmer, Thai, and Lao writing belong to related Brahmi-descended traditions, but their letters are not interchangeable. Khmer script is also used for regional minority languages such as Tampuan, Krung, and Cham.

Technical or language-learning context; it reads as a Khmer letter, not a chat reaction.

Do not translate the isolated letter as a complete Khmer word.
