Khmer Letter Cha

7/114

Khmer cha, ឆ, is an aspirated consonant—roughly a “ch” released with a puff of air. As an a-series consonant, it helps determine how vowel signs sound; in a stack, its subscript form joins the consonant before it. The same written form also occurs as a Khmer verb meaning “to cheat,” so one bare ឆ can be a letter or a word.

What ឆ means

It is a “ch” sound released with a puff of air. That extra breath is what “aspirated” means here. Khmer puts ឆ in the a-series, one of two consonant groups that affect a syllable’s built-in vowel—the vowel heard when no separate vowel sign is added. Vowel signs, syllable position, and any consonant stack complete the reading, so bare ឆ is not a full translation.

The Khmer script descends from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian writing system. Its earliest inscriptions resemble Pallava, a script used in southern India, though the exact path is unresolved. An inscription at Angkor Borei dated to 611 CE records temple offerings, labor, and revenue owed to religious institutions, showing how early Khmer writing served public and religious record-keeping.

Why does the vowel change around ឆ?

Its consonant series helps choose the vowel reading. Khmer consonants have a built-in vowel when no vowel mark is written. A vowel sign’s sound depends in part on which of the two consonant series its base letter belongs to. Because ឆ is in the first, a-series, the same mark can sound different beside it than beside a second-series consonant.

Thai script had adapted forms from Khmer by the 13th century, extending the script’s regional history.

How do I type subscript ឆ?

Put Khmer coeng before ឆ in the character sequence. The coeng sign (្, U17D2) followed by ឆ forms a subscript beneath the preceding consonant. Coeng is a shaping instruction, not a visible standalone letter, so the editor and font need to support Khmer shaping.

This is Khmer-script writing; the surrounding message helps tell whether a lone ឆ is a letter or a word.

A bare ឆ is not a reliable translation.

1

Why does ឆ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Khmer block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
