Khmer Letter Ha

33/114

On the NiDA V1.0 Khmer keyboard, H types ហ, the Khmer consonant ha. In a word it contributes a breathy h sound; the vowel sign and consonant series determine the full syllable sound.

What ហ means

On the NiDA V1.0 Khmer layout, press H.

For a consonant cluster, enter the base consonant, the Khmer COENG sign ្, then the next consonant. OpenType Khmer shaping—the font’s layout rules—places the second consonant below the first.

What sound does Khmer ហ make?

It is the Khmer consonant ha, not a word by itself.

Khmer groups consonants into two series, and ហ belongs to the first. An attached vowel sign can sound different with each series, so read the whole syllable.

A stone inscription from Angkor Borei, K.557/600, is dated 611 CE and records Old Khmer in Early Pallava script, a South Indian script from the ancient Brahmi family. It is an early dated witness to Khmer writing, not the date of this exact letterform. Religious works in Sanskrit and Pali were written with Khmer letters or translated into Khmer. Inscriptions recorded donors, religious foundations, personal names, and libraries; books written on palm leaves carried literary and religious works. Khmer, Thai, and Lao scripts belong to Brahmi-derived traditions, but that shared ancestry alone does not establish a direct letter-to-letter match for ហ.

What does it mean when someone sends ហ alone?

Read it as a Khmer consonant, not a complete message.

A lone consonant gives too little context to identify the intended word; ask for the surrounding word or sentence.

Neutral in Khmer writing; its sound and role come from the syllable and word around it.

Alone, it gives too little context to translate; ask what it belongs to.

បា បា combines ប and the long-vowel sign ា, forming “ba” with a long a; Khmer uses it to distinguish this sequence from ហ.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ហ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
