khmer letter tha

Khmer Letter Tha

17/114

ថ is a Khmer consonant used in spelling; its vowel signs can sit around it, and ្ថ places it below another consonant in a cluster. Khmer writing developed from Pallava forms in the Brahmi tradition, and the earliest dated Khmer inscription is from 611 CE at Angkor Borei. Thai and Lao are related script traditions.

What ថ means

It contributes a consonant sound to a Khmer word. “Tha” is its Latin transliteration, not a full pronunciation guide: the surrounding spelling matters. Khmer vowel signs can appear before, after, above, or below a consonant, and the consonant series affects the vowel sound. Read the whole word to understand it.

Khmer writing developed from Pallava forms used in southern India and Southeast Asia during the 5th and 6th centuries, within the Brahmi tradition. An upright inscribed stone at Angkor Borei bears Sanskrit and Khmer text recording offerings to local gods; other inscriptions recorded donors, dates, land, personnel, and rules for sacred sites.

A Siamese manuscript manual made around 1833–1890 grouped Old Khmer with Old Thai and Pallava Grantha for script study. Khmer, Thai, and Lao belong to related regional script traditions, but their letters are not interchangeable.

Why does ថ turn into a lower shape?

A coeng sign makes it subscript in a consonant cluster. The sequence ្ថ uses coeng with ថ to form the Khmer tha subscript; it suppresses the second consonant’s intervening inherent vowel. Coeng is a control character, so it does not appear as a separate visible mark.

Khmer letters may look different in a cluster because fonts shape consonants into attached forms. Vowel pieces can also appear before, above, below, or after the base consonant even when they come later in the encoded text. If the spelling looks wrong, check the whole syllable and the font before changing ថ to ឋ.

Neutral as written language; its tone depends on the surrounding Khmer text.

A lone ថ gives too little context to interpret as a complete spelling.

Questions people ask

1

Why does Khmer text look wrong around ថ?

A font or shaping issue may be responsible. Khmer clusters use subscript consonants, and vowel pieces can appear in a different visual order; check the full syllable in a Khmer-capable font before changing the letter.
