What ซ means
On the Kedmanee Thai keyboard, press Shiftsemicolon.
If you get ว, you pressed the key without Shift. Pattachote is a different Thai keyboard layout: check which layout is active.
An unfamiliar outline can be a font difference. Thai fonts can draw ซ differently while preserving the same character.
What sound does ซ make?
At a syllable's start, it sounds like s in “sun.”
ซ belongs to the low consonant class, a spelling group used to determine tone—not an instruction to speak low. Its class combines with vowel length, the syllable ending and tone marks. ส, ศ and ษ share its initial sound but belong to the high class; keep the word's correct spelling.
Its spelling carries history
ซ belongs to the Sukhothai development of Thai writing from Old Khmer models, adapted to represent Tai-language sounds. An early landmark is the Ram Khamhaeng Inscription, a stone inscription traditionally dated 1292.
Thai and Lao later developed along separate paths. In Isan, northeastern Thailand, some words use ซ where their standard Thai counterparts use ช. That regional correspondence does not make the letters interchangeable in standard Thai.
Read ซ as a letter in Thai text, not as an emoji reaction.
Do not confuse ซ with ช: their standard Thai initial sounds are s and ch.

Questions people ask
1Why does ซ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
