What ฟ means
At the start, f; closing the syllable, p.
Its initial sound is f, as in “fine”. Official Thai romanization, which writes Thai with Latin letters, uses fa for ฟ้า and soep for เสิร์ฟ. In that system, initial ฟ is written f, not ph.
The school name ฟอ ฟัน is read fo fan. ฟัน means “tooth” or “teeth”, the word chosen to help you remember the letter.
Where did ฟ come from?
It was added when an older script was adapted for Thai. Thai writing developed from Old Khmer, with deeper roots in Brahmi and Grantha, older Indian scripts.
Sukhothai’s Inscription 1, a carved stone text conventionally dated 1292, is commonly cited as the earliest record of this Thai script; its authenticity is debated. A 2019 study published by Silpakorn University lists ฟ among ten consonants added for Thai sounds. The inscription’s date does not establish when the precise modern letter shape appeared.
A 2025 study of Old Thai and Old Lao inscriptions reconstructs ฟ as /v/ in Old Thai: like f with vibrating vocal cords. Modern Thai uses /f/; the letter survived a change in its initial sound.
Neutral in everyday Thai writing, including loanwords.
At a syllable’s end, ฟ sounds like p, not f.
