What sound does ธ make?
A puffed t initially; a clipped t finally.
In Thai romanization, th means a t with a puff of air, not the English sounds in think or this. At a syllable's end, ธ is a t without an audible release. It belongs to the low consonant class, one of the groups used to determine a syllable's tone. Several letters share its sounds, so pronunciation alone cannot tell you a word's spelling.
Where did ธ come from?
It developed within Thai script's Old Khmer-derived writing tradition.
Old Khmer writing ultimately descended from Indian scripts. Thai adapted that tradition to represent its consonants, vowels, and tones. An early landmark is Sukhothai Inscription 1, an inscribed stone dated 1292. That date concerns the history of Thai script, rather than the invention of ธ as an isolated sign.
Ordinary in Thai spelling; the standalone pronoun belongs to a literary register.
The romanization th does not tell you which Thai consonant to write.

1Can ธ be a word by itself?
Yes. In poetic Thai, it can refer to a person of authority as a third-person pronoun, rather than forming part of a longer word.
