What ด means
It represents a consonant sound, not a standalone meaning. The learning name ด เด็ก, do dek, pairs the Thai letter d with เด็ก, meaning “child.” That word helps you remember the letter.
ด belongs to the mid-class consonants, a spelling group used to determine tone—the pitch pattern of a syllable. “Mid class” does not mean an automatic middle tone: read tone marks together with the consonant class.
Where does ด come from?
Thai writing adapted older letters to represent Thai speech. It developed through Old Khmer within the family descended from Brahmi, an ancient Indian script. Sukhothai Inscription 1, a stone text dated 1292, is early evidence of Thai writing, not a precise date for today’s ด shape. Consonant classes once reflected sound distinctions that later changed; they still help determine tone.
How do I type ด?
On Thai Kedmanee, press f without Shift. Activate that keyboard layout first. Pattachote and other Thai layouts can place ด elsewhere.
A vowel displayed to the left of ด goes before it in the text. Combining marks—signs attached above or below a letter—go after the consonant.
Alone, ด reads as a letter sample rather than a social reaction.
Do not translate ด alone as “child”; that meaning belongs to เด็ก.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
