What ช means
Enable Thai input, then select the ช key. Kedmanee and Pattachote are different Thai keyboard layouts. Their maps in CLDR 43, Unicode's keyboard reference, place ช on different keys: check your active layout before following someone else's shortcut.
A vowel displayed to the left of ช is stored before it, too. When entering such a vowel separately, put it before the consonant in the text sequence.
What sound does ช make?
It represents ch initially and t at a syllable's end. Its “low class” is a spelling category, not an instruction to speak in a low pitch. Together with the vowel, ending, and any tone mark, it helps determine the syllable's tone.
ช ช้าง pairs the letter with ช้าง, meaning “elephant,” to help learners remember it; a 2020 Thai literacy lesson uses this pairing. The elephant word identifies the letter, rather than translating lone ช.
Thai writing developed from older scripts
Thai script was adapted to record the Thai language, drawing on Old Khmer writing documented in 10th–13th-century inscriptions. An early example of Sukhothai Thai writing is Inscription 1, a text carved in stone bearing the date 1292. Its traditional attribution to King Ramkhamhaeng and its authenticity are debated; the script's development should not be reduced to a single inventor.

Questions people ask
1Why does ช show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
