Lao Letter Ko

1/83

On a Lao keyboard, switch to Lao input and select ກ; the physical key depends on the layout. This Lao k consonant begins syllables, and its name ko kai uses “chicken” as a spelling mnemonic. In a word, the letter marks a sound, not a chicken.

What ກ means

Switch to Lao input; the key for ກ depends on the layout.

On a Lao keyboard, ກ is one Lao consonant; fonts can give it different outlines without changing the character.

What sound does ກ make?

It marks the plain k sound at a Lao syllable’s start.

When spelling aloud, this letter is named ko kai (also written ko kay), using ໄກ່, “chicken,” as a mnemonic. The name helps identify the letter; it does not give chicken-related meaning to every word containing ກ.

Why do Lao vowels appear before ກ?

Some Lao vowels are written first but displayed to ກ’s left.

Thus ໂກະ is one syllable, not reversed text. Vowels, tone marks, and final consonants complete its reading; ກ alone is only the initial consonant. The letter belongs to an evolving Tai writing tradition. Lao script’s wider family traces to South Asian Brahmi and Pallava forms, with regional Khmer and Mon writing traditions. Fak Kham, an older regional script, is described as a prototype for Lao; in the Lan Xang kingdom, Sukhothai forms were adapted into Old Lao, also called Tai Noi, for everyday writing.

A Tai-Lao inscription dated 1459 may have been brought from Thailand. Michel Lorrillard identifies the Tha Khaek stele—an inscribed stone dated 17 April 1494—as apparently the oldest genuine example of Lao script. In Lan Xang, imported Tham script served Pali, a Buddhist literary language, and other religious writing, while Lao forms served everyday texts. By 1960, Lao spelling had moved toward a more sound-based system. Script choice marked different settings; ກ marks the k consonant in Lao words.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ກ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
