What ຢ means
It marks the initial y sound in a Lao syllable. Letter lists also give its name as yo or ya. By itself it has no fixed translation; in ຢາ, the whole word means “medicine,” so that meaning belongs to the word, not just its first letter.
Do not substitute ຍ: ຢ marks the y sound, like the start of “yes,” while ຍ marks a blended n-y sound, like the middle consonant sound in “canyon.” They belong to different Lao tone classes, which help determine a syllable’s pitch pattern.
Where did the Lao script behind ຢ come from?
The Lao script developed through regional writing traditions. One academic account dates early evidence of secular, or nonreligious, Lao script at Tha Khaek to 1494; another dates a stele there to 1497. An inscription at Luang Prabang is dated 1530. These forms were already diverging from the regional Fak Kham script model.
Alongside secular writing, the Tham script, derived from Lan Na traditions, served especially for Buddhist texts in Pali, a language used in Buddhist scripture. The earliest recovered Lao inscription in Tham is dated 1527. Lao and Thai scripts are close relatives, but Thai spellings do not automatically work in Lao.
Why does a vowel appear before ຢ?
That is normal Lao spelling order. Some Lao vowel signs are displayed and encoded before their consonant, so ເຢ is an ordinary sequence, not a broken character.
