What ນ means

It is the Lao consonant for the n sound.

In a Lao word, ນ contributes an n sound, like the n in English “no.” Lao consonants fall into tone classes; ນ is low-class, and its class works with the vowel, syllable ending, and any tone mark to determine the spoken tone. A LaoKey10 phonetic guide dated 3 January 2022 maps the Latin key n to ນ.

The alphabet mnemonic “no nok” pairs the letter name with nok, Lao for “bird”; it helps learners remember the letter, but it does not make ນ mean “bird.”

Where does the Lao letter come from?

Its closest predecessor is Lao Buhan, also called Tai Noi.

Modern Lao developed from Lao Buhan, a script used for secular writing. Tham was another Lao-area tradition, rooted in South Indian writing systems adapted for Pali, the language of Buddhist scripture, and local languages. In Laos, Tham was mainly religious, while Lao Buhan served secular writing. The oldest dated Tham document is from CE 1376; the oldest dated Tham Lao manuscript in the Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts collection is from CE 1520.

Lao Buhan and Tai Noi were used for different Tai languages. Related letter forms could have different historical sound values across those varieties, so resemblance does not guarantee the same pronunciation; in modern Lao, ນ represents the n sound.

Why can Lao marks look misplaced?

Lao fonts position vowels and tone marks around consonants.

Lao vowels and tone marks are separate characters, but a shaping font may display them before, above, or below the consonant they accompany. If a mark looks displaced, check the text order and whether the font supports Lao shaping.

Neutral as a Lao consonant; its role is to provide the n sound.

Alone, ນ gives an n sound, not a complete word.

Why does ນ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
