Lao Ho No

80/83

ໜ is Lao’s high-class n spelling: its silent h element changes how a syllable follows tone rules. Called ho no, it appears inside words such as ໜຶ່ງ (“one”) and has the same spelling role as the two-character form ຫນ.

Text symbol

What ໜ means

It makes Lao n follow the high-class tone rules.

In Lao, ho no is the high-class counterpart of ນ. “High-class” names one of the consonant groups used by Lao tone rules; the h is silent.

It appears inside words such as ໜຶ່ງ (“one”), ໜ້າ (“face/front”), and ຫົວໜ້າ (“leader”). It is not a complete word on its own.

What is the difference between ໜ and ຫນ?

The two forms have the same spelling role but different character counts.

ໜ is one encoded character: a Lao ligature, or single character representing hn. ຫນ writes those two letters separately. The difference can affect cursor movement, selection, and character counts even when the spelling is equivalent.

Modern Lao instructional material commonly presents ໜ as the compact form, while readers may also meet ຫນ. The matching compact Lao spelling ໝ serves the same high-class role for m.

How did ໜ develop in Lao writing?

Lao writing took shape through several regional scripts. It developed from South Indian models through the Sukhothai and Fak Kham scripts into local Lao forms. Historians cautiously place the oldest Lao texts in the 14th century; clear inscriptions in the secular Lao script are dated to 1497.

The tone spelling came from a silent ຫ before ນ: it lets the low-class n follow high-class tone rules. ໜ represents that hn spelling as one compact character.

Lao writing used the Tham script mainly for religious texts and Lao Buhan mainly for secular ones. A 1975 spelling reform moved standard Lao toward more phonetic spellings.

In Lao writing, ໜ is neutral spelling with a tone-marking role.

Alone, it is a consonant letter, not a complete Lao reply.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ໜ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
