Lao Letter Co

It starts a syllable with a sound close to English “ch.” Latin-letter spellings of Lao use c or ch. Some English teaching materials use j as a rough cue; these spellings are approximations, not different meanings.

ຈ is a mid-class consonant. That spelling class works with the vowel, syllable ending, and any tone mark to determine the syllable’s tone, or pitch pattern.

Where did ຈ come from?

Lao writing took shape through several related script traditions. After the Lao principalities were unified, rulers of the Lan Xang kingdom commissioned a writing system for Lao. Lao letterforms developed through the earlier Sukhothai and Fak Kham script traditions, which are related to Old Khmer writing. Contact with Lan Na and Buddhist institutions helped Lao writing spread.

The earliest evidence does not point to one uncontested date. A Ban Huay Say inscription is dated 1468 but may have been moved from across the Mekong. One inscription study treats a damaged Tha Khaek stele dated 1494 as the oldest genuine Lao-script example; another overview gives 1497 for the first true secular Lao-script examples. Lao Buddhist manuscripts also used the Tham script for Pali, a language used in Buddhist texts.

Why is a vowel written before ຈ?

That is normal Lao spelling. Some Lao vowel signs are written before their consonant, while others go after, above, or below it. A vowel sign before ຈ is part of the spelling, not a second letter.
