A halant is a mark that removes the built-in vowel. Beside another consonant, च can take a reduced or combined shape. If the font lacks that shape, the halant may remain visible.

The script evolved from Brahmi, attested in inscriptions from the third century BCE, through Proto-Nagari, an early form emerging by the end of the sixth century CE. Devanagari was important for writing Sanskrit by the eleventh century CE; editions in the print era strengthened that role.
