What ज means
It represents the consonant sound “j.”
In Hindi, ज read on its own carries a short “a.” Vowel marks change that vowel: जा is jā, जि is ji, and जो is jo in Latin-letter transcription. Hindi usually leaves the built-in vowel unspoken at a word’s end.
Where did Devanagari ja come from?
Its script lineage developed over many centuries.
Brahmi, an early Indian script, appears in Emperor Ashoka’s inscriptions in the third century BCE. Through Gupta and Siddhamatrika scripts, North Indian writing developed into Nagari from the 10th century, then Devanagari. This is the history of the script lineage, not a date for the modern letter’s exact shape.
Inscriptions and books used these scripts to record language. Early inscriptions used Prakrit; later North Indian inscriptions favored Sanskrit. Devanagari is also used to write Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, and other languages.
Why does ज change shape in a word?
Devanagari joins consonants in some combinations.
A halant, also called virama, removes ज’s built-in vowel: ज्. Between consonants, it allows a joined form. Fonts and shaping software determine whether the result appears as a combined shape, a reduced letter, or a visible halant. The joined form ज्ञ combines ज् and ञ.
