Telugu Letter Ja

Alone, జ sounds roughly like the “j” in “jam” plus a short “ah.”

Telugu ja is a consonant with an inherent short “a”: a vowel mark changes that vowel, and a virama (a mark that cancels it) removes it. It can then join another consonant, as in the cluster జ్ఞ in జ్ఞానం. Read the whole spelling to know the syllable.

On Windows, as of 2026, choose Telugu Phonetic, type the transliteration ja, and select its suggestion. Telugu InScript maps జ to lowercase p. The first converts Latin-letter sound input; the second follows a fixed key layout.

An input tool may form a cluster such as జ్ఞానం from several characters even when you choose one suggestion. Some Telugu vowel marks appear around the base letter although they follow it in text; their screen position does not tell you the input order.
