What अ means

It represents a vowel sound, not a pictorial idea. Use this short a when the vowel begins a syllable independently. A Devanagari consonant already includes a default vowel, called its inherent vowel: you do not add अ to supply it. Other vowels after consonants are written with attached vowel signs.

The letter evolved within a writing tradition. Devanagari developed through the earlier Gupta and Nagari scripts from Brahmi, attested in Emperor Ashoka's third-century BCE edicts—public inscriptions of his proclamations. Those inscriptions are evidence of the ancestral script, not the modern अ shape. Devanagari later served languages including Hindi, Marathi and Nepali, while this letter retained its vowel role.

Read it as a letter before guessing a reaction. By itself, अ identifies the script but not which language or message the sender intended. Ask for the surrounding word if the context is unclear.

Why does अ look different in another font?

Fonts draw the same letter differently. For अ alone, a change in style need not mean a different character. In longer Devanagari text, software also shapes letters together; check the underlying text before replacing it.
