What ह means
Think “ha”: an h sound with a built-in vowel. That vowel is called the inherent vowel; an attached vowel sign replaces it. Devanagari h is written as Latin h when transliterating—representing one script with another—but its exact pronunciation depends on the language.
How did Devanagari evolve?
ह belongs to a script that evolved through older writing traditions. Brahmi, an ancestor script, appears in inscriptions from the third century BCE. Devanagari developed through Gupta and Nagari stages and was used to write Sanskrit by the eleventh century CE. These are stages in the script’s history, not dates for the exact modern shape of ह.
The script records speech using consonants and vowel signs. In the print era, its role expanded in everyday literacy and Hindi identity. Gujarati and Bengali writing belong to the same broader script family, not copies of Devanagari.
How does the halant change ह?
The halant removes the vowel: ह् is h without “a.” Also called a virama, this mark can link ह to a following consonant in a conjunct—a joined consonant form. Characters remain stored in reading order, but the joined shape depends on the font and application.
ह is an ordinary letter; read its tone from the surrounding words.

2Questions people ask
1Why does ह sometimes sound like just h?
Because Hindi can drop the inherent vowel within words. This vowel, called schwa, is a short, unstressed “uh” sound; a written consonant can therefore be pronounced without an audible vowel.
