What व means
It writes a consonant; its sound depends on the language.
In Sanskrit teaching, bare व is read as va because consonants carry an inherent a unless another vowel sign changes it. Hindi व is commonly described as a sound between English v and w. The same Devanagari letter can have different sound values across languages.
Where did व come from?
It belongs to a letter tradition that developed over centuries.
Its historical lineage passes through Brahmi, Gupta, and Nagari writing. Brahmi is attested in inscriptions from the third century BCE; early Nagari forms appear toward the late sixth century CE. Devanagari was important for writing Sanskrit by the eleventh century.
These scripts were used to write language. Brahmi appears in Emperor Ashoka’s public proclamations; later, Devanagari was used for Sanskrit inscriptions and handwritten religious texts. Brahmi 𑀯 is an earlier va in this historical lineage; Gujarati વ and Modi 𑘪 are related letters in their own scripts.
Why does व change shape?
Vowel signs and consonant clusters affect how it appears.
Vowel signs make forms such as वा, वि, and वे. The vowel-cancelling mark called halant or virama makes व्. In श्व and द्व, the text encodes a consonant, a virama, and another consonant; a font may display the cluster with a reduced letterform or a joined ligature. The appearance can change while the underlying letters stay the same.
An ordinary letter in written language, with no special conversational tone.
English v and w are only rough guides to Hindi व.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
